Van Buttercup

“Sometimes I see a photograph, and I feel the irrepressible need to draw it.”

The work of Sydney based illustrator Van Buttercup was born from a magnetic attraction to the pop reinterpretation of icons of culture. Her portrait reinterpretations range from the classical and Renaissance to modern and contemporary.

In Barcelona, she completed her studies of artistic jewellery and graphic design. Her relationship with these techniques influences the treatment of the portraits she creates, hence the meticulous and ornamental detail along with the use of strong and warm colours.

Van takes inspiration from artist Tamara Lempika and is influenced by the way painting and illustration have evolved and collided in the last century. Van’s style echoes traditional stained glass designs consisting of bright colours separated by thick lines. This treatment creates a distinct and personal interpretation of her subjects. She has previously worked with canvas and acrylics, but now primarily uses foils and felt pens.
